When Germany’s U-boats went to war with Allied shipping in September 1939, Canada had thirteen warships and no real plan. What followed was the most audacious military expansion in Canadian history.
Thanks for an excellent article, as Mr. Williams said a reminder for what Canada can achieve. I wished I had asked one of my uncles more about his experiences on RCN corvettes during WW2.
A really great article about what Canada could achieve in the past. Through most of my life I felt pride knowing what we were able to achieve in those desperate times. I wish it wasn’t the case but I feel the time more achievement of this scale is past. I would say there isn’t currently significant enough external pressure to generate a similar collective effort. And also when we have a federal government who have successful worked to divide us ,over the past decade, it seems unlikely we can flip the coin to come together.
What will the spirit of Canada create in this next decade?
"In 1939, Halifax was a modest, faded port city. Its harbour was commodious, its dockyard Victorian. By 1942, it had become one of the most strategically vital ports on earth."
thank you for this reminder that when set out to do something we can do great things. We will do so again.
