The Canadian government is rushing to pass a massive grocery rebate while simultaneously reopening a fifty-year-old wound that destroyed three thousand families.
When Trudeau the Elder passed away in 2000, Chretien wanted to beatify his mentor. His attempt to rename Mount Logan (highest mountain in Canada) to Mount Trudeau didn't work out. Chretien imposed a name change on Montreal (Dorval) Airport.
At the time and ever since, I argued they should have renamed Mirabel Airport to recognize the Elder because Mirabel was part of and much like his legacy. Like the Elder, Mirabel was controversial, hugely expensive, damaging to Canadians and ultimately useless.
Mirabel was a sop to Quebec Nationalism rather than a practical solution to air trans port changes. The excuse was that passengers were increasingly flying far more as time went on. The Feds felt more airports were needed. London knew this too but realized that planes were becoming huge. Actually fewer planes were needed but the terminals had to be enlarged not the airports. I had a couple of letters published pointing this out, but it was ignored. Mirabel was an expesive disaster because of an intellrctual failure by a Canadian Governments siding with Quebec nationalism rather than reality.Dorval was the headquarters of Ferry Command during WW2 something that is entirely ignored in Quebec school history books.
