Thank you Mike. While it is sorrowful that those people died, it is good to know that some good came out of it. Also I hope that Fawcett was severely punished for his actions.

He was not punished at all. I pulled the May 1981 Dubin Commission report to check what happened to Harold Fawcett. While Justice Dubin found Fawcett's defiance constituted complete insubordination, he concluded it carried no criminal intent because Fawcett acted out of a misguided conviction to protect aviation safety. Dubin accepted his apology and formally recommended that no disciplinary action or proceedings be taken against him. Instead, Dubin urged that Fawcett be appointed to the new independent safety board so Canada would not lose his investigative talent.

Thank you for that update. I still think he should have been punished for destroying evidence.

This story took my breath away, although its not the first time I've read about this tragedy. I have had a property 6 km from the site for the past 20 years.

The Cranbrook field is beautifully situated but, obviously, susceptible to bouts of very heavy snowfall and zero visibility.

This event impacted the community for decades.

A troubling article, Mike. Unless I read it incorrectly Dr. Dube might have joined Mr. Fawcett in stern reprimands if not more severe consequences.
