I was thinking about the Anglosphere intelligence alliance (FVEY, UKUSA) integration while reading this. A quick search suggested that the CBSA is as integrated as I already knew the RCMP were.
As more Canadians recognize the greatest threat to the sovereignty of Northern North American Nations (Canada and pre-existing/Indigenous nations) isn't from distant Westphalian governments, but the USA and other parts of the Anglosphere, I wonder when that agency integration question will be adequately discussed and addressed.
Since CBSA unionized, in an effort to secure higher salaries for their employees, the union postured to extend the description of their authority into being a law enforcement role vs an administrative role. They've succeeded somewhat, resulting in higher salaries and their frontline officers being trained to carry firearms and issued body armour. But there's not been any meaningful change of the legislation constraining CBSA's authority to border crossing facilities.
Trudeau the Younger promised to bolster both CBSA and RCMP's presence on the border... as has Mark Carney... but both agencies struggle to recruit due to their DEI hiring priorities.
CBSA and the RCMP will both need to be expanded and their border protection roles enhanced to prepare for the wave of migrants that will appear when climate change triggers mass migrations from the global center (equatorial regions) to the global polar regions (us).
