True story: I first learned about Anik, Alouette I and II from my Scouts Canada Handbook. There was a blurb called Canada in Space or something related to the astronomy badge.
So proud of Canada's leadership in space. And now we are developing our own launch sites and our own network relay system. Thank you for sharing this Mike.
I worked for Communications Canada and later Industry Canada and the CRC was under my department and a portion of the staff from my branch worked at CRC so I had to visit CRC on a regular basis and work with the scientists on some projects. On several occasions, I visited the David Florida Lab (DFL) where they assembled and tested all these satellites and many others. It is an impressive facility. The DFL was later transferred to the Canadian Space Agency.
Great article - Canada used to punch above its weight in many ways. From 1987 to 1993, I worked at Canadian Satellite Communications Inc. (Cancom), which used the Anik D satellite for a number of different services, including providing television signals across Canada to lots of extremely small communities that had never had cable TV. Some residents had such poor off-air reception before cable TV that they had watched Hockey Night in Canada for years without ever being able to see the puck.
Yes, an excellent retrospective on our satellite expertise! MDA, Telesat Canada, Kepler should be companies all Canadians should be proud of as well. And Dominion Dynamics is also one of several rising stars. Go sovereign Canadian space!
Excellent background summary. Thank-you.
